August brings one of our favourite events of the year to Arden Early Learning: National Science Week. All month long, our Airlie Beach centre turns into a hub of curiosity, with hands-on science activities for children designed to spark wonder about the world around them.
Why Science Activities Matter in the Early Years
Children are natural scientists. From the moment they can crawl, they are testing, observing, and asking why. Structured science activities for children simply give that natural curiosity a framework to grow within. Through simple experiments, children build:
– Observation and prediction skills
– Early mathematical thinking, through measuring and comparing
– Language for describing what they see, hear, and feel
– Confidence in trying things that might not work the first time
At Arden Early Learning, we believe science activities for children should always feel like play first and learning second, because that is exactly how young children learn best.
Our Science Week Program
Bubbling Volcanoes
Using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, children create their own eruptions, learning about chemical reactions in the most delightfully messy way possible. We talk through what is happening using simple, accurate language, so children build real scientific vocabulary alongside the fun.
Sink or Float Stations
A tub of water and a basket of everyday objects is all it takes for children to form predictions, test them, and talk about why some things float and others sink.
Rainbow Walking Water
Coloured water travels between cups through folded paper towel, and children watch, fascinated, as colours blend and move. It is a beautiful, low-cost way to explore capillary action.
Whitsundays Nature Investigations
Being based in Airlie Beach, we take full advantage of our stunning local environment. Children collect leaves, shells, and rocks on nature walks, then sort and classify their finds back at the centre, connecting science learning directly to our own backyard.
Bringing Science Home
Families can extend the fun with simple science activities for children at home, such as freezing small toys in ice and letting children work out how to free them, or growing a bean in a jar to observe roots and shoots.
Science Week is a wonderful reminder that curiosity is the beginning of all learning, and at Arden Early Learning, we are proud to nurture that spark every single day, not just in August.
